“Removing the Mask”

The art, music and culture of Russia have been hidden from western eyes for more than 100 years. Now, people have an immense interest in learning more about this fascinating country. Sergei Shapoval, dressed in a traditional Russian folk costume, begins his multi-faceted presentation by pinpointing Russia on a world map and noting its relationship with the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. Next, a full-color slide presentation offers a kaleidoscopic look at Moscow. A short video follows, highlighting a traditional folk dance. Then, the audience becomes involved by experiencing the Cyrillic alphabet.

A live demonstration of Russian folk instruments – including the Garmoshka, Balalaika, flutes and Bayan/button accordion – gets the audience actively participating in folk dancing and playing authentic musical instruments. In the workshops that follow, Sergei elaborates on individual art objects and other unique materials. Last, but not least, Sergei saves time for questions and answers.

The Russian Kaleidoscope program is available year-round.

“The assemblies were outstanding, and the workshops provided a wonderful opportunity for students to learn even more about the Russian culture. Sergei’s presentations were, as always, a wealth of information that captivated the students’ attention and expanded their learning horizons. In fact, I even overheard one student telling a friend after the program, “I want to go to Russia.” I particularly appreciated the way that Sergei actively involved the students in each presentation. The various aspects of the Russian culture, such as dance, musical instruments, attire, really sprang to life when the kids participated. I could see in their eyes how excited and fascinated they were by the new learning they experienced during the assemblies and workshops.”
