AUSTRALIAN KALEIDOSCOPE
“Out of the Dreamtime”
From the only continent that is also a country comes “Australian Kaleidoscope” with Martin and Nellie Beggs from Sydney, New South Wales. They will introduce audiences to both the young nation of Australia that was federated in 1901 and the ancient land of the indigenous aboriginal people who have lived there for at least 40,000 years.
Martin and Nellie will intertwine songs and stories with a multi-media presentation to give a look at the “Land Down Under” through the eyes of the original aboriginal inhabitants, the convicts sent to the “colony of New South Wales” and the very first European settlers who arrived in the 1700’s. These early explorers, farmers, shearers, cattlemen and miners brought their pioneering vigor to this fascinating land of the kangaroo, platypus and emu.
Students will see a demonstration of traditional aboriginal music instruments such as the didgeridoo and rhythm sticks as well as native dances. Aboriginal artwork, artifacts, maps, pictures, flags and more will be part of the workshops. Students will learn about a day in the life of indigenous women and girls, the early women settlers and modern day Australian women. Audiences will have the opportunity to participate in forming a bush-band, to join in a simple folk song and learn an aboriginal dance.
The “Australian Kaleidoscope” experience will have you saying “G’day” to your “mates” and understanding the meaning of “tucker” and “billabong.”
The Australian Kaleidoscope program is available April 2 to May 11, 2012. All dates must be booked by December 30, 2011.
